Meet our founder, Mischa
My name is Mischa Dubrovo, and I am the founder of Apex Revival. At the age of 22 I signed up and successfully made it through to join Her Majesty’s Armed Forces as a Royal Marines Commando. At the end of the 32 weeks of recruit training, which takes place at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM), I was awarded The Diamond Award for exceedingly excellent conduct and constantly maintaining high standards across all components of the course. Following recruit training I spent six months serving as a general duties marine at 43 Commando in Helensburgh, Scotland. Here I was part of R Squadron – a team of marines that specialised in close quarter battle, and who were responsible for guarding nuclear submarines while docked at base. Besides my responsibilities as a soldier, I also took part in on-camp powerlifting competitions and indoor rowing events. It was during this time of my military career that I also qualified as a personal fitness trainer and a sports coach.
I decided to move on from Scotland and try something new. I applied for the six-month long marine & navy military chef course which was run at the HMS Raleigh Naval Base in Torpoint, England. Once I had successfully completed the military chef course, I was posted to Commando Logistics Regiment (CLR) in Barnstaple, England, where again, besides my duties as a soldier, I took part in multiple sporting events and activities such as powerlifting and long-distance running. A year after joining CLR I decided to close the military chapter of my life and expand my horizons spiritually, mentally, and physically.

Contrasting with my military experiences, I felt pulled to explore and live a life that was more aligned and in touch with Nature and the rhythms therein. It was not long after I left the marines and returned to South Africa that I began laying the foundations for an off-grid lifestyle. During these years I learnt about natural building methods, how to grow and harvest food, animal husbandry, grassland and soil regeneration, how to live off the surrounding natural resources, plant and maintain a food forest, and many other skills that living in the wild present. I built my own house combining local and European methods (weaving and cobbing respectively), and using local materials like clay, sand, cow dung, and Wattle and Bluegum trees from the surrounding plantations and forests. Besides the roof, ceiling, and second-hand windows and doors, the entire house was built using natural materials. I used stored rainwater for drinking water, and candles for nighttime illumination as I chose not to install electricity. Living this way opened my heart and soul to, and left me with an unparalleled appreciation for, the beauty and wonder of the rhythms of Nature.
After spending six years living a quiet off-grid life in a food forest, I decided to pay my dues looking after wildlife in wild Africa – I decided to involve myself in anti-poaching operations in the most northern province of Mozambique, Niassa. During my time here I was tasked to lead anti-poaching patrols and operations covering a large portion of the province of Niassa. I was blessed to spend plenty of time with the local people of Niassa which allowed me to learn so much about their culture and relationship with the natural world around them.
